How does the Dyson Ball Upright Vacuum Work?

This is the same question that many Dyson owners, and those considering purchasing one, have asked. They know it works. They know the suction is the most powerful they’ve ever felt in a vacuum. And most importantly, they know their carpets are cleaner and look better than they ever have before. But HOW does it get their carpet so clean?

The answer is found in the patented Root Cyclone technology first developed by James Dyson in a factory setting more than 30 years ago. There, he created a cyclone tower that spun air fast enough to create a vacuum more than 100,000 times stronger than gravity. Dust particles were no match for it, and they were sucked out of the factory where they could no longer prove a menace to workers and machines. Later, Dyson adapted the technology to vacuum cleaners, going through more than 5,000 prototypes before the first model hit the showroom.

The cyclone technology centers on a lightweight, digital motor that spins at 88,000 rpm, or in laymen’s terms, 20 times faster than the motor that powers your favorite race car driver around the track. That is more than 3 times faster than competing vacuums, and that’s humming! The speed in the Dyson Upright Vacuum, and other models for that matter, is achieved by a stator that rapidly switches magnetic polarity up to 3,000 times per second. This is the same technology that power plants use to generate electricity! There are no carbon brushes to impede speed. Air spinning that fast creates a cyclone, or tornado, effect that pulls in dirt and pushes it to the bottom of the bin, where it cannot impede performance. Suction remains consistent, even as dirt accumulates, and that sets Dysons apart from traditional vacuums. The technologically advanced will comprehend this and marvel. The non-technical won’t get it and still marvel, because for both the facts are the same: These machines work! Cleaner, better looking carpets are the proof. That’s the bottom-line evidence we all want when choosing our next vacuum.
